Private Residence

Madison, WI

A retired couple dreamed of a home fit for their golden years so that limited mobility wouldn't force them to move or renovate.

The tight lot, orientation and grades led to the development of an L-shaped design with living and sleeping wings. The west face has limited windows to ensure privacy and limit solar heat gain while the east face has a court and a large expanse of glass for a strong indoor-outdoor connection.

Low-sloped roofs limit the impact on the neighbors, navigate roof water to appropriate locations and provide shade where needed. A simple, clean mix of materials accent the exterior.

All doors, bathrooms and circulation paths are designed following universal design or ADA guidelines. The lower level is designed for a future caretaker suite.
