Two-Flat

Madison, WI

An underwhelming ranch home occupied a prime site on a busy, traditional street. The owner wished to re-purpose the building as a long-term residence with income generation.

We proposed a two-flat residence. The design’s massing and forms follow the pattern of the existing neighboring structures but in a contemporary form. Gabled and flat roof elements are integrated, drawing from the nearby architecture.

The site design meets a variety of codes relating to open space, impervious areas, bicycle and vehicular parking, easements and building setbacks. The site plan provides open space for gathering and entertaining, on-site water infiltration and landscape/vegetable gardening. Each flat incorporates living spaces, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, an office, laundry and porches in a tight, clean footprint. The project received approvals from a variety of reviews including Historic Landmarks and Plan Commission.
