Private Residence

Westchester County, NY

This new home is situated on a scenic lot featuring mature trees, remnant gardens set for restoration and a spring-fed pond. The client commissioned Barnett Architecture to develop a design through the and then hand off to a local firm with BA reviewing the construction documents at scheduled intervals prior to construction.

The design process began by developing a series of site studies addressing wetland boundaries, existing house removal, significant topographic features and the existing entry drive and site utilities.

All living spaces face the pond—the "jewel"—from the living and dining rooms to the screen porch and away room to the master bedroom. The guest bedrooms are above the garage for privacy while the exercise, office and sitting room are centrally located over the main house for easy access.

The clients sought a home which gave them a feel of history and comfort. The massing is defined by simple gables with hip and shed accents to mark distinct spaces. The massing, along with a mix of siding treatment, lends to an image of the house being built over time.
