Private Residence

Madison, WI

A young couple loved the neighborhood but their home lacked many features to match their lifestyle. After looking at other homes on the market, they decided to renovate and expand. Project goals were to: Open the living spaces; Create a kitchen to cook and entertain; Provide space for guests to visit; and Create a more distinctive architectural style.

After considering many options through a collaborative process, the project settled on “bookend” additions. The concept created a master bedroom suite and a new stair at the north end juxtaposed by the entry, kitchen, and garage at the south. Sitting between the two is a court for outdoor entertaining. The basement provides for a new laundry room, renovated family room, work area and future guest suite. Design features include an open plan, corner windows, vaulted ceilings and abundant natural light.

All existing siding and windows were replaced. The simple gabled roof house now recalls the spirit of mid-century modern architecture.
