Private Residence

Madison, WI

Goals for this project were aimed to address necessary changes caused by a house fire and to develop a plan for an addition to fit the client’s lifestyle. The first floor was expanded and remodeled to create a gracious dining room, modern kitchen, family room, laundry room and powder room. The second-floor addition allows for a master bedroom suite and study.

The client thought it important to maintain the Tudor architectural character. This was accomplished by incorporating roof forms which honored the prominence of the original house, matching the existing stucco and trim details and selecting window sizes in proportional to existing windows.

The client wished to expand the house along an existing bearing wall without any exposed beams. With collaboration from the owner, contractor and structural engineer, it was realized by hiding cantilever framing members within the addition to support existing framing.
